The Community Classroom Project will try to fix that.

On Friday, the nonprofit organization, launched by innovative schoolhouse and community fulcrum Space of Mind, will kick off a monthly series called Delray Nights Throwback to celebrate the old-school downtown vibe and the tribe that made it distinctive.

The inaugural gathering will honor John Paul Kline, the revered chef who opened 3rd and 3rd, the music-friendly restaurant and bar in downtown Delray Beach, in 2013. Kline died three years later.

Taking place at The Hub at Space of Mind (101 NW First Ave.) from 8 p.m. to midnight, the inaugural Delray Nights Throwback will include sets from local favorites Spred the Dub, along with light bites from chef Jessie Steele, a donation bar and an atmosphere that aims to recreate the spirit of Delray’s old-school music venues. Tickets cost $50. (Teacher tickets are 50% off to celebrate the back-to-school season.) Visit FindSpaceOfMind.com.

Ali Kaufman, founding director of the Community Classroom Project and its culinary program, the Community Classroom Kitchen, had a relationship with Kline that predates 3rd and 3rd. Friday’s event will raise money in his honor.

“I’m looking forward to celebrating with JP’s longtime friends and all the lovers of the OG Delray local scene this Friday. We’ll be raising the vibe, raising some picklebacks and raising some funds to launch the John Paul Kline Culinary Arts Scholarship,” Kaufman says. “We will continue to carry on his dream of celebrating food, art and people, always all at once.”

Relax. As the brothers at Mickey Byrne’s Irish Pub in downtown Hollywood will remind you, even if your worst fears are realized, “fat, drunk and stupid” is exactly the way to go through life if you want to be a member of Congress like Sen. John Blutarsky. And the bar in the Senate is even lower now. Mickey Byrne’s will celebrate the enduring lessons of the 1978 film “Animal House,” sort of a documentary on college life, with a Toga Party on Saturday night. Read on for details.

(Rain-proof) weekend things to do: Jonas Brothers, Brittany Brave, bull riders, Bridgerton Brunch https://www.sun-sentinel.com/2024/08/01/weekend-things-to-do-kane-brown-brittany-brave-professional-bull-riders-and-the-bridgerton-brunch/ Thu, 01 Aug 2024 08:40:04 +0000 https://www.sun-sentinel.com/?p=11654763 I know my limits. I would not dare attempt what the professional bull riders of the new Florida Freedom team will do in Sunrise this weekend, and I’ll steer clear of NOBO Brewing’s high-octane Dragon Fruit Imperial Blonde Ale, thank you very much. I will shy away from Emo Night Karaoke (you’re welcome) and, heck, I’m probably not man enough for The Bridgerton Brunch at Thrōw Social in Delray Beach on Sunday. But, you? I’m sure you’re up for all of it. Here are some of my favorite events this weekend, nearly all of them sheltered from the wet weather in the South Florida forecast (and Slightly Stoopid might be even more fun in the rain).

FRIDAY

Uneasy riders: South Florida’s newest team, the Florida Freedom of the Professional Bull Riders league, will make their home debut this weekend during their inaugural homestand at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise. Featuring teenage phenom John Crimber, the No. 1 pick in the recent PBR draft, the Freedom will compete at 7:45 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2:45 p.m. Sunday. Tickets start at $20+, or $99+ for a three-day pass. Visit Instagram.com/flfreedompbr or pbr.com/teams/florida-freedom.

A new dish: Fort Lauderdale chef Paula DaSilva (once of Gordon Ramsay’s reality-TV competition “Hell’s Kitchen”) continues her monthly culinary series Paula’s Food Diaries at Burlock Coast Seafare & Spirits in Fort Lauderdale with an August menu featuring a favorite dish by celebrity chef and friend Aarón Sánchez. Debuting this weekend, Sánchez’s Cobia Tiradito ($23) is composed of thinly sliced cobia paired with Creole tomatoes, crispy hominy and an array of seasonings, dressed in a tiradito sauce made with yuzu juice and white soy sauce. It will be available at Burlock Coast, the waterfront restaurant at The Ritz-Carlton in Fort Lauderdale, through Aug. 31. Visit BurlockCoast.com.

Power trip: Teatro Avante’s 38th annual International Hispanic Theatre Festival of Miami at the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts offers performances of “Disonancia” (Dissonance), prolific Havana-born playwright Abel González Melo’s compelling treatise on the lasting effects of authoritarian regimes on society. Weekend things to do (updated): Blake Shelton, Chelsea Handler, Freaky Tiki, ABBA/Queen Bingo Brunch https://www.sun-sentinel.com/2024/07/25/weekend-things-to-do-missy-elliott-blake-shelton-bring-it-on-tributes-to-jimmy-buffett-talking-heads/ Thu, 25 Jul 2024 10:00:03 +0000 https://www.sun-sentinel.com/?p=11644967 This is a good week for the ladies, and not a moment too soon. (This is not a reference to the exciting developments in presidential politics. Necessarily.)

The calendar is about to flip to August, when the already incessant yammering about Tua and the Dolphins, Canes and Gators, another breakup of the Marlins and blah-de-blah will become even more oppressive. (I say this as a sports fan of impeccable qualifications. Fight me.)

So we look forward to celebrating other ways of looking at life, found in the bold style of Chelsea Handler and (soon) Cassadee Pope, the cult-y cinematic escapism of  “Bring It On” (anyone else forget it stars Dwyane Wade’s wife, Gabrielle Union?), the ABBA/Queen Bingo Brunch at Crazy Uncle Mike’s in Boca Raton, the Pop Icons Drag Brunch at Tin Roof in Delray Beach, and the bottomless Rosa Mimosa at Miami rooftop Rosa Sky’s new disco brunch. Here we go …

Weekend things to do (updated): Covechella beer festival, Buddy Guy farewell, Foreigner and Styx, Rock of ABBA tribute https://www.sun-sentinel.com/2024/07/18/weekend-things-to-do-janet-jackson-buddy-guy-farewell-covechella-beer-festival-burger-battle-in-boynton/ Thu, 18 Jul 2024 11:00:47 +0000 https://www.sun-sentinel.com/?p=11635902 The brewery aesthetic is familiar almost everywhere you go, an industrial jumble of metal and brick, rough woods and dark walls sometimes interrupted by splashes of graffiti or a mural.

The Cove Brewery went another way when it opened a year ago, the first brewery in Deerfield Beach.

Located just across the Intracoastal Waterway from the Deerfield Beach International Fishing Pier, a hub for the local surf-culture community for years, The Cove is bright and airy, with blond woods, surfing iconography and a relaxing palette that draws from the sea, sand and sky.

Likewise, the beers made at The Cove tend to be light and bright with tropical impulses. A new one is called Toes in Sand, an IPA that dances with blood orange, tangerine and gooseberries.

The brewery’s owners, siblings Kristy Hartofilis and Jay Whelchel, say it was just natural to lean into the family-oriented “old coastal Florida” vibe they grew up with.

“Deerfield Beach is such a coastal lifestyle. There’s so many fishermen, surfers, volleyball players, paddle boarders, you name it,” says Whelchel, raised with his sister in neighboring Boca Raton. “We grew up going to the Deerfield Beach pier and Island Water Sports, which has anchored that beach for a long time. We went to camps when we were kids, hung out there.”

On Saturday, The Cove Brewery, located in the city’s iconic Cove Shopping Center, will celebrate its first anniversary with Covechella, a free block party that will take place from 1 to 10 p.m. The festival will include six new beer releases, more than a dozen vendors and food from neighbors including Won-Tom’s, Tipperary Pub, Casa Maya Grill, Papa’s Raw Bar, The Modern Rose, Patrizia’s of N.Y.C. and Whit’s Frozen Custard.

There also will be live music from Tasty Vibrations (1 p.m.), Over on Two (4 p.m.) and Bryant Del Toro (7 p.m.), plus a DJ, adult games such as beer pong and cornhole, and a dedicated area for kids’ activities.

“The idea of Covechella was to celebrate the community, being part of the fabric of the community,” says Hartofilis, pointing out that the day also will support local nonprofit Captains for Clean Water

Hartofilis and Whelchel came to the brewery business with real-estate backgrounds and an appreciation for beer culture informed by family travels from North Carolina to Colorado.

“Some of the best family-oriented spots were breweries,” Whelchel says. “People want to go to breweries. They are very interesting, novel places to experience.”

Being the first brewery in a city, especially one with no true downtown, required a new template. Whelchel points out that the brewery sits on the edge of the massive Cove neighborhood, which like a lot of eastside neighborhoods built 50 or 60 years ago has no gates, clubhouse or tennis courts.

The Cove Brewery serves as a kind of neighborhood clubhouse, drawing walkers, bikers and golf-carters from around the area, he says.

“I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished. It’s a lot harder than it looks, let’s put it that way,” Whelchel says. “We’re getting a lot of good feedback from the locals. They say all the time, we didn’t even realize this was something we needed.”

July 4th Weekend things to do (updated): Country music in Flagler Village, FlockFest, Vegan Street Party and 4 a.m. tacos https://www.sun-sentinel.com/2024/07/04/fourth-of-july-weekend-things-to-do-country-music-in-flagler-village-vegan-street-party-american-idiots-and-4-a-m-tacos/ Thu, 04 Jul 2024 11:00:00 +0000 https://www.sun-sentinel.com/?p=11617323 Fourth of July Weekend is a sentimental time, amid all the grilling and chilling our appreciation of the independence afforded us by Washington, Hamilton, Jefferson and the rest is supposed to be at its peak. It’s a nostalgic time, even after all the fireworks, as we wallow in the memories provided by a great tribute band, a classic movie (“Jaws,” anyone?), an outdoor party under the embrace of a giant shade tree, award-winning barbecue and drinking beer in a Hawaiian shirt. Here we go!

FRIDAY

Backyard party: Pompano Beach Arts and South Bar & Kitchen on Friday will kick off a new summer event called the Backyard Jam Concert Series, taking place from 6 to 10 p.m. on the first and third Fridays of the month in July, August and September. The setting will be Old Town’s Backyard, one of the city’s signature outdoor hangout spaces tucked under a massive tree behind South Bar & Kitchen. Along with South’s Dixie-centric food and drink, the inaugural gathering will have pop, rock and funk covers by locals Sacred Union (including former members of popular funk band B-Side Jones). Visit PompanoBeachArts.org.

Country in Flagler: Recently opened 511 Bar & Lounge in Flagler Village will go full ‘Murica with live country music and celebrated barbecue on Friday. In the beautiful indoor-outdoor space once occupied by restaurant-bar Aqui, the 511 party will feature music from Miami boot-scooter Gabriel Key and his band (as seen at this year’s Seaglass Rose Experience on the beach) at 7 p.m. The meat will come from Delray Beach-based  Mistah Lee’s Smokin’ Good BBQ, which was recently voted the best barbecue spot in South Florida by Sun Sentinel readers. Drinks-wise, there will be $7 house margaritas (by El Bandido Tequila) in flavors such as mango, peach, prickly pear, passion fruit, strawberry and watermelon from 4 to 7 p.m. ($10 after 7 p.m.). You’ll also find $3 Busch Light drafts and $6 tequila shots all night. God bless the U.S.A. Visit Instagram.com/511bar_.

Friday tributes: Revolution Live in downtown Fort Lauderdale will offer a double bill of The Chili Poppers (a Red Hot Chili Peppers tribute) and American Idiots (Green Day tribute) on Friday night. Tickets start at $9.25+ as part of a four-pack at Ticketmaster.com. Doors open at 7 p.m. Visit JoinTheRevolution.net. … ELO tribute Ticket to the Moon is at The Funky Biscuit in Boca Raton on Friday at 9 p.m. Tickets start at $25+ for general-admission standing room. Visit FunkyBiscuit.com.

Old chum: Coral Gables Art Cinema’s plan to screen a 4K restoration of the ultimate Fourth of July thriller, Steven Spielberg’s 1975 classic “Jaws,” on Thursday was such a great idea that tickets soon disappeared. But, fear not, the theater has added an encore screening on Friday at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $11.75+, $10 for military, students and seniors. Visit GablesCinema.com.

Freedom of expression: The Boca Raton Museum of Art will continue its free-admission offer, so popular last month, through the end of July. Among the best reasons to get to the inviting Mizner Park venue is the exhibit “Myths, Secrets, Lies, and Truths: Photography from the Doug McCraw Collection.” The works from the Fort Lauderdale arts patron (and creator of the original FAT Village) include more than 100 pieces from five artists: Hank Willis Thomas, Liesa Cole, Karen Graffeo, Sheila Pree Bright and Spider Martin. You may find the themes that reverberate in the work of the latter two photographers particularly compelling and instructive this weekend. Bright’s work is from her “Young Americans” series, in which she invited a cross-section of young people new to the voting process to pose with the American flag while recording their thoughts on the banner’s meaning. The late Spider Martin was an acclaimed newspaper photojournalist best known for images taken at the height of the 1960s Civil Rights movement. The Boca Raton Museum exhibit offers historic images from the 1965 Selma to Montgomery March, including the attack on peaceful marchers by state troopers at the Edmund Pettus Bridge, an iconic incident known as Bloody Sunday. For more information, visit BocaMuseum.org.

Put on your boogie shoes: Almost since their formation in Hialeah in 1973, KC and the Sunshine Band have been an essential part of the classic disco-era soundtrack, both because of the hits (“Get Down Tonight,” “That’s the Way,” “Keep It Comin’ Love” and “Boogie Shoes,” among many others) and singer Harry Wayne Casey’s charismatic joy in sharing them. The band’s 50th anniversary celebration tour continues at 8 p.m. Friday at Hard Rock Live in Hollywood. Tickets start at $40+ at MyHRL.com.

Bags of booze: Bodega Taqueria y Tequila locations in downtown Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach will get an early start on festivities, opening at 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday with DJ sets and drink specials. Be on the lookout for Bodega’s summer-themed cocktail pouches. Priced at $14 each, they come in four flavors: Pico Picante (Gran Centenario Plata Tequila, lime, spicy agave, cucumber); Purple Paloma (400 Conejos Mezcal infused with butterfly pea flower, lime, grapefruit, agave, Owen’s grapefruit mixer); Margarita (Maestro Dobel Diamante Tequila, lime, agave); and Strawberry Lemonade (E11even Vodka, lemon, agave, strawberry). Visit BodegaTaqueria.com.

With an attractive architectural nod to the Mediterranean Revival warmth of the former occupant of the land — the stately old Great Southern Hotel, torn down in 2020 — Block 40 Food Hall is located on the ground floor of the 1818 Park residential tower. The venue will be operated by Society 8 Hospitality, known for Sistrunk Marketplace & Brewery, The House on the River and Wild Thyme Oceanside Eatery in Fort Lauderdale. Visit Block40FoodHall.com.

Block 40 Food Hall is expected to debut in September in downtown Hollywood, on the ground floor of 1818 Park, a residential tower built on land that once was home to the historic Great Southern Hotel. The 18,000-square-foot food hall will sit behind a re-creation of the facade of the old three-story hotel.

The 23-city Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour will stop at Hard Rock Live in Hollywood on Nov. 8. Tickets for the show start at $85+ at MyHRL.com. … Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Ray LaMontagne will bring the tour supporting new album “Long Way Home” (set for release on Aug. 16) to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale on Sept. 27. Purple pros: One could argue (I will) that South Beach did not become a thing on the pop culture map until Prince opened his East Coast version of nightclub Glam Slam at 1235 Washington Ave. 30 years ago. The space, later known as Mansion, now M2 Miami, will host a party for the pop icon on Friday, when he would have turned 66 (regally). The multimedia evening runs from 7 to 11 p.m. and will include live music (!) from a Prince cover band and cocktails inspired by his songs. Tickets cost $10. Visit M2Miami.com.

Night fever: The global phenomenon Gimme Gimme Disco, a DJ dance party fueled by the music of ABBA, the Bee Gees, Donna Summer and Gloria Gaynor, comes to Revolution Live in Fort Lauderdale on Friday night. Disco attire very recommended. You know who you are. Doors open at 10:30 p.m., with music at 11 p.m. Tickets for the 21-and-older show cost $13+ at JoinTheRevolution.net

Free music: The free community picnics known as Starlight Musicals return to downtown Fort Lauderdale’s Holiday Park on Friday with the infectious grooves of Marijah & The Reggae All Stars. Set on the football field on the east side of the park each Friday for the next 10 weeks, these concerts are BYO-whatever events, with lawn chairs, picnic baskets and coolers encouraged, and plenty of room for the kids to run off pent-up energy. Food and beverages also will be available for purchase. The music runs from 7 to 10 p.m., but insiders know that the lights don’t come on right away. The Pantry of Broward and LifeNet4Families will accept donations of nonperishable food, and you can donate pet food to Abandoned Pet Rescue. Visit Parks.FortLauderdale.gov/starlight.

Weekend sweets: Miami’s beloved churros and ice cream pop-up Santo Dulce Churros has a new summer residency on the edge of Weston and Southwest Ranches at 5140 SW 208th Lane (roughly Griffin Road and Highway 27). It is there that you can enjoy their newest creation, the ChurroCone. These treats begin with warm, crispy, flavor-infused churro dough twisted into a cone that is topped by Santo Dulce’s signature ice cream. Hours will be 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 2 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Visit Facebook.com/santodulcechurros.

SATURDAY

Weekend laughs: Smart and accomplished actor, writer, producer and podcaster Whitney Cummings somehow has found her way back to the stand-up stage on a tour that will stop at the Dania Improv in Dania Beach on Saturday. She has performances at 7 (sold out) and 9:30 p.m. Saturday, 5 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets cost $40+ at DaniaImprov.com.

Delray pride: The Delray Beach Pride Festival will bring food, vendors and live entertainment to the crossroad emblazoned with the city’s iconic Pride flag (Northeast Second Avenue between East Atlantic Avenue and Northeast Second Street) on Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m. Events will lead into a free concert on Old School Square by duo The Little Things and the Taylor Swift tribute Lovestory. Gates open at 6:30 p.m., and the concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Bring a chair. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Visit Facebook.com/DelrayOldSchoolSquare.

Helen back: Be on the lookout for the caftan-ed and bewigged Helens of the South Florida chapter of Mrs. Roper Romp, who are planning to gather at Thrōw Social in Delray Beach on Saturday at 3 p.m. to celebrate the patron saint of spousal frustration (Helen Roper was played by Audra Lindley in the bawdy sitcom “Three’s Company”). Who knows where else they’ll end up? For information the group (which hosted their first Romp at Fort Lauderdale’s Elbo Room in October), check their page on Facebook. In possibly unrelated news, Thrōw Social recently introduced a self-pour wall with 20 taps serving cocktails, seltzers, wine and beer. Visit Facebook.com/throwsocialdelray.

Sponge worthy: Slow Burn Theater Co. on Saturday opens its two-week run of “The SpongeBob Musical” at the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale, a Tony-nominated show based on the wacky and beloved Nickelodeon cartoon that premiered in 1999, with music from David Bowie, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Sara Bareilles, The Flaming Lips, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! at the Disco and others. Tickets start at $54 at BrowardCenter.org. My favorite review of the show, published last fall at ChicagoOnStage.com, began: “I have never watched a single episode of ‘SpongeBob Squarepants.’ As I entered the Chopin Theatre to see the opening night of Kokandy’s ‘The SpongeBob Musical,’ pretty much all I knew was the fact that the title character lives in a pineapple under the sea — I have no clue how I even knew that much.” One paragraph later, the reviewer pronounced it “one of the most purely entertaining shows of the year.”

Miguel all over: Mexican heartthrob Luis Miguel arrives in South Florida this weekend, a trail of sold-out concerts behind him on the North American leg of his international tour. The crooner performs at  8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Kaseya Center in Miami. Tickets start at $91+ at Ticketmaster.com

Think pink: Probably no more fitting spot to enjoy National Rosé Day on Saturday than at Rosa Sky Rooftop, perched over the panorama of Miami’s gleaming Brickell neighborhood (it became the second-most attractive rooftop operated by The Restaurant People after they opened Nubé on Fort Lauderdale beach). Bottles of rosé will be half-price all day until 10 p.m. Visit Instagram.com/rosaskyrooftop

Cat match fever: The Florida Panthers return to the Stanley Cup Final on Saturday with a Game 1 match in Sunrise against the perfectly innocuous Edmonton Oilers (after series against Tampa, Boston and New York, Panthers fans are out of insults anyway). When it comes to watch-party plans for the series, the best-kept secret around is the Barrel Room around back of Funky Buddha Brewery in Oakland Park, which is a little tricky to locate if you don’t know where you’re going. The brewery has posted a map on Facebook to guide you. The Federal (Instagram.com/the_federal_ftl), the Panthers’ restaurant on the second floor of their new  Baptist Health IcePlex practice facility, has been packed with enthusiastic crowds for big-screen viewing. There is free admission to the facility and plenty of free parking (Instagram.com/ftlwarmemorial). The Bite Eatery in Pompano Beach is hosting a watch party, with free shots after the Cats win (Instagram.com/thebiteeatery) I’ve also heard good things about watch events at Pompano Beach Brewing Co. (Facebook.com/pompanobeachbrewing) and Tin Roof in Delray Beach (TinRoofDelrayBeach.com).

The temporary shutdown of The Bite Eatery''s Deli Shack this past weekend prompted some customers to sound off on social media.

Does anything in these pictures look familiar? Each was taken at a local restaurant (one each in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties) for our new visual trivia contest called iSpy SoFlo. Weekend things to do (updated): Teacher love at Kapow, Pink Floyd tribute, Buzzed Spelling Bee, a rainbow taco https://www.sun-sentinel.com/2024/05/30/weekend-things-to-do-haitian-film-festival-tributes-to-the-smiths-and-pink-floyd-a-memorable-burger/ Thu, 30 May 2024 10:00:54 +0000 https://www.sun-sentinel.com/?p=11531725 We gather here every week to talk about places to go, things to do, eats to eat and drinks to drink in South Florida — it can all become a blur, even without the Woodford. The premise of the Sun Sentinel’s iSpy SoFlo contest, which debuted last week, is to slow down for a minute, to appreciate what makes the local scene distinctive.

In case you missed its debut, playing iSpy SoFlo is simple: We will publish a small section of a photo of something that can be seen at a random location in South Florida — a restaurant, bar, entertainment venue, cultural site — and you tell us where to find it. Yes, there will be prizes.

Going forward the feature will include a single image, but the introduction has three ways to win, with photos taken at restaurants in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

To enter, submit your guesses at SunSentinel.com/iSpy. You’ll notice the form includes the option of subscribing to The Weekender newsletter, which arrives in your inbox on Thursdays. The newsletter will offer subscribers a major clue to the challenge: The entire image that was taken at the three mystery restaurants.

We’re taking entries for this edition of iSpy SoFlo through Sunday, June 16, and will announce randomly chosen winners that week. One winner will be chosen for each mystery location, where the proprietor of the venue will offer that person a prize.

Don’t tell the bosses, but we’re going to offer readers of The Go Guide their own clues to the visual puzzle. In the partial images seen below, clockwise from top left: At this Broward County restaurant, Mrs. Staz once carried this bag; the cow head represents a luxurious type of Japanese steak sold at this Palm Beach County eatery; this Miami bakery is owned and operated by a former first responder.

FRIDAY

Teacher appreciation: Kapow Noodle Bar will celebrate Palm Beach County teachers this summer by offering 50% off drinks and 25% off food every day until 4 p.m. at both the Boca Raton and West Palm Beach locations, beginning Friday through Aug. 31. Kapow’s summertime perks also will include giving away thousands of dollars in $20 gift cards to local teachers. To nominate a deserving teacher, send an email to katie@kapownoodlebar.com with “teacher appreciation” in the subject line. Include the teacher’s name, school and contact information.  Visit KapowNoodleBar.com.

Small wonders: The ninth annual Old School Square Center for the Arts 6×6 Exhibition and Sale takes place on Friday at The Hub @ Space of Mind in downtown Delray Beach. The fundraiser gathers hundreds of original works — each measuring 6-by-6 inches, most by local artists — to raise money for arts programming in the city’s public schools. The works will be up for a public preview from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with registration for prospective buyers at 4:30 p.m. Each work will cost $35 during a lottery-style sale beginning at 6 p.m. Visit Facebook.com/OldSchoolSquare.

That means a burger-filled rainbow waffle tortilla filled with lemon chile aioli, green onion, bacon, tater tots, queso blanco, plus a medium egg and candied pepitas. It’s available through Saturday and costs $6.25, with a portion of the proceeds supporting Lambda Legal, the largest legal organization in the U.S. dedicated to protecting the civil rights of the LGBTQ+ community. The Pride Brunch Burger taco will be available through June 3. Visit VelvetTaco.com.

Weekend burger: We’re at the end of National Burger Month and I have one more that I have been recommending: The All Day Burger at The Katherine in downtown Fort Lauderdale. It’s not often you get a burger from a chef on the order of Timon Balloo (multiple James Beard Award nominee), and his handheld is offered with unadorned confidence — two patties, cheese, sweet pickle remoulade ($18). It’s perfect, and just one reason to find Balloo’s hidden-in-plain-sight gem. You’ll find the All Day Burger on the menu between the Thai Red Curry Branzino and the Roasted Marrow Bones. Visit TheKatherineRestaurant.com.

Weekend laughs: Comedian Lavell Crawford has a long and varied resume as a comic actor and talk-show wiseguy, but we’ll probably never be able to unsee his role as Huell in “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul.” Crawford is at the Dania Improv in Dania Beach this weekend for shows at 7:30 and 10 p.m. Friday, 7 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday and 7 p.m. Sunday. The directors of the films will take part in a post-screening Q&A. The films begin at 7 p.m., with vinyl sets from DJ Humpback and Nosocials, plus konpa dance lessons from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Art After Dark runs from 6 to 10 p.m. each Friday. Admission is $10, students $5. Visit Norton.org.

Bee is for beer: Garden District Taproom in West Palm Beach hosts another edition of Buzzed Spelling Bee on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Like it sounds, it’s a night of semi-competitive spelling with participants emboldened by free beer shooters. It’s free to enter at GardenDistrictWPB.com/spelling-bee.

Secret doors: The Tiny Door Hunt has returned to downtown West Palm Beach, with the scavenger hunt happening every weekend through July 7.  How it works: The West Palm Beach Downtown Development Authority and Tiny Doors WPB shop and studio will hide tiny doors around downtown each week, with three winners who find them getting prizes worth about $100. The contest opens every Friday at 1 p.m. and closes on Sunday at 11:59 p.m. Winners are announced each Monday at 5 p.m.  Visit Downtownwpb.com/tinydoorhunt, TinyDoors.org.

SATURDAY

Emeril tribute: Chef Paula DaSilva, alum of Gordon Ramsay’s reality-TV cooking competition “Hell’s Kitchen,” on Saturday, June 1, will revive popular summer culinary series Paula’s Food Diaries at Burlock Coast Seafare & Spirits, the waterfront restaurant at The Ritz-Carlton in Fort Lauderdale. Each month during the series DaSilva and staff will spotlight a different signature dish from one of her celebrity friends — in June that will be chef Emeril Lagasse’s Seared Scallops, paired with a truffle white-bean puree and finished with a rich wild mushroom sauce. Cost: $52+. July’s feature will be chef Lorena Garcia’s Asado Negro Arepas. For information and reservations, visit BurlockCoast.com.

Funky Cats: When it comes to Florida Panthers watch parties, Funky Buddha Brewery in Oakland Park has been a consistently enjoyable place to catch a playoff game, with great beer and food, an engaged crowd (but not too intense, you know?) and enough elbow room that you won’t accidentally catch the stray Rangers fan in the mouth. The Cats have a chance to clinch the series in Saturday’s 8 p.m. Game 6 against the New Yorkers, so things could end up extra fun at the Funky. Get there early. Visit FunkyBuddha.com.

Good people: The Scuba4Good Music Festival takes place 3-9 p.m. Saturday at beachfront El Prado Park in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, featuring local bands, food and drink, craft beers, vendor shopping and a raffle with many impressive items. To market, to market: The Summer Delray GreenMarket is back on Old School Square in downtown Delray Beach on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. A cornucopia of local produce, flowers, food, drinks and live music, the market will happen each Saturday through July 27. Visit DelrayOldSchoolSquare.com.

Floyd revelation: Performing at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach on Saturday at 8 p.m., Floyd Nation is everything you want in a Pink Floyd tribute band, offering respectful and polished versions of the songs you love (they clearly love them, too) under an enveloping veil of lights and lasers. That such devotion to this music springs from the city of Alva, population less than 3,000 on the Caloosahatchee River east of Fort Myers, must warm David Gilmour’s heart. Tickets for the show start at $25+ at Kravis.org.

Beer outing: Riverwalk Rhythm & Brews returns to Esplanade Park on the New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale on Saturday from 2 to 6 p.m. with food trucks, games and kids’ activities, beer from South Beach Brewing and MIA Brewhouse, and music from versatile cover band Catabella.  Admission is free. Tickets for the 3 p.m. screening cost $25, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Pink Angels Memorial Foundation. The  5 p.m. event costs $30 and will support SunServe. The celebration is co-hosted by South Florida archivist Stephane Heller, who will present the bonus short film “My Day with Marilyn,” about her father, Sam Heller, who was a 17-year-old Atlantic City waiter who suddenly found himself part of the media frenzy photographing Hollywood’s greatest movie star at the 1952 Miss America Parade. Stephane and Sam Heller, an 89-year-old Hollywood resident, will attend. Visit FLIFF.com/marilyn.

Panthers watch: It will be hard to match the watch-party energy of the series-clinching win over Boston last weekend at a packed Baptist Health Iceplex, but any game against any team from New York will inspire, um, enthusiasm. Your hometown Fightin’ Maurices will take on the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden at 8 p.m. Friday, when the Panthers’ will host a big-screen watch party across two levels of their new practice facility in downtown Fort Lauderdale, including at The Federal restaurant and on the big video board over the team’s practice rink. Admission is free, parking is free and the concession stands don’t kill you on food and drink: For instance, $10 chicken tenders and fries, $4.50 Coors Light. Insider tip: If you’re watching from the bleachers at the practice rink, bring a sweater. Looking ahead, the Panthers and Rangers play in Sunrise on Sunday at 3 p.m. Visit FTLWarMemorial.com

Weekend playlist: Young Palm Beach Gardens singer-songwriter and actor Ben Krieger, class of 2022 at Dreyfoos School of the Arts and performer at SunFest 2024, last week put out a debut EP, “Frostbite,” that seems likely to foreshadow bigger things. Krieger’s heart-on-his-sleeve yearning and frustration pour out over six tracks, the EP’s splendidly spare production (mostly by L.A.-based Dylan Thom) providing a thoughtful showcase for warm, confident and nuanced vocals (Exhibit A: opening track “Love in the Dark”). You can find “Frostbite” on Spotify, Apple Music and other digital outlets. Visit Instagram.com/benkriegermusic.
